WNBA star Brittney Griner remains in Russia because she was caught carrying vape cartridges containing hashish oil.
On Wednesday, Griner was able to visit with U.S. consular officials. U.S. State Department spokesperson Ned Price provided an update on that visit.
“U.S. consular official was able to verify that she is doing as well as can be expected,” Price said, via ESPN. “We’ll continue to work closely with her legal team and her broader network.”
While the United States continues to work with Griner’s legal team, former deputy assistant secretary of defense Evelyn Farkas recently made a head-turning comment about this situation during an appearance on NBC’s TODAY.
Farkas isn’t entirely sure Griner was carrying hashish oil when traveling to Russia.
“We don’t know whether she brought these hash vaping items into Russia or not. The Russians are notorious for planting drugs and other things on Americans,” Farkas said, via Fox News.
Farkas also questioned Russia’s human rights record.
“Russia has a horrendous human rights record and they’re in a position to release a lot of people being held against their will, not just those three Americans,” he added.
If convicted, Griner could face up to 10 years in a Russian prison.
